Results from the Illini Invite/Volunteering Recap!
October 10th, 2016 · by Jon Mulvey

Results from the Illini Invite/Volunteering RecapMajor congratulations are in order for our travel team, who took second place at this year's 16-team Illini Invite at the University of Illinois in Champaign/Urbana.

Despite not being able to send our full team, we were still able to go 3-0 to win our pool on Friday and Saturday. After beating Iowa State in the first knockout round of the gold bracket, we received a walkover against UW-Milwaukee in the semi-finals. Against Illinois A in the final, we lost 23-22 in a supertiebreaker. I still couldn't really be happier with a 5-1 record over the course of the weekend, which now represents our best-ever finish in the Midwest's second biggest tournament of the fall season. Major props to everyone who played (especially Tim, who became the first-ever club member to have a golden set in a competitive Tennis on Campus match)!

I also want to make special note of all of the wonderful community service we have been able to do so far this fall. As of today, our club members have logged over 88 total hours of volunteer work in the past month. Earlier in September, we took part in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Lombard, and this past weekend, we were able to volunteer downtown at the Chicago Marathon. Thank you to all of our club members who have volunteered so far this year!

If you'd like to follow along with our progress this year both on and off the court, make sure to follow us on social media--especially our semi-new Instagram account.

USTA Nationals/Spring Invite Recap and Results!
August 2nd, 2016 · by Jon Mulvey

USTA Nationals/Spring Invitational Recap and Results!Hello again, everyone. There are lots of updates, which I hope you were already able to follow on social media. Our A team traveled to Nationals in North Carolina and won the Bronze Bracket, while our B team traveled to Arizona for its first ever national-level tournament.

Having qualified for Nationals for only the second time in the history of our club, we struggled on the first day in Cary, North Carolina, losing matches to Minnesota, Texas A&M, and Arizona State. This put us in the Bronze Bracket for the last two days of the tournament. After beating NY-Stoney Brook and the University of Delaware on Friday, we beat UC-Santa Barbara and then Harvard University in the final on Saturday to end the tournament on an unbelievably high note. Special recognition goes out to seniors Andrea Kinnerk and Andrew Weitzer who finished off the mixed doubles set to cap their four-year club tennis careers here at DePaul. All in all, 49th place in the country and a tournament medal to go with it isn't all that bad of a weekend.

The previous week, our B team traveled to Tucson, Arizona to take part in their first ever national-level tournament. During three days of matches, they beat teams from UC-Santa Cruz, Northern Arizona, and Arizona State, finishing higher than several other A teams from the Midwest. In their first full season, the B team finished with a winning record of 9-4.

With the 2015/2016 season now officially in the books, we start looking forward to 2016/2017. Information regarding fall practices and travel team tryouts will be posted at the start of September, but, for now, make sure to follow us on all of our social media pages: Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

If you have any questions regarding the club, they can be address to me at jon@depaulclubtennis.org.

A Bid to Nationals and Midwest Leader of the Year?!
February 25th, 2016 · by Jon Mulvey

A Bid to USTA Tennis on Campus Nationals and USTA Midwest Leader of the Year?!Well, this past weekend went better than anyone in our club could have possibly hoped. We finished in 6th place overall at USTA Midwest Sectionals in Madison (our highest finish EVER), earned a bid to USTA Tennis on Campus Nationals in April, and I won USTA Midwest Leader of the Year. Who saw all of that coming? Not me.

In all honesty, I can't put into words just how proud I am of our team and how well we played this past weekend. Not only did we win our pool at Sectionals for the first time, but we also came from three games behind going into mixed doubles to beat Notre Dame and win our first ever round of sixteen match. We lost a close match in the quarterfinals against eventual runners-up Wisconsin, but we recovered to beat a great team from Butler to earn our place at Nationals in Cary, North Carolina this April.

For our seniors, everything has come full circle. In 2013, when they were freshmen, we earned an automatic bid to Nationals as USTA Midwest Club of the Year. This year, as seniors, we've qualified for Nationals solely because of how strong we were on the court. Ask the me from four years ago if we could ever qualify for Nationals by finishing top six in the Midwest and I would have laughed and called you crazy.

Winning the USTA Midwest Tennis on Campus Leader of the Year award is not just recognition for me, it's for ALL OF US as a club. It's recognition of how far we've come over the past five years and of all that we've accomplished together. I wouldn't have been able to do everything I've done without a truly exceptional team behind me.

As a famous singer once said: We've come a long way, baby. I can't wait to see where we go from here.

Thank You for the Practice, DePaul Women's Tennis!
November 5th, 2015 · by Jon Mulvey

Thank You for the Practice, DePaul University Women's Tennis!First off, I need to start with a huge thank you to Coach Mark Ardizzone and DePaul University Women's Tennis. For the the third year in a row, Mark and I worked to organize a special joint practice between his girls and our full club at Lakeshore. Forty club members/friends participated and it was, I have to say, the best one yet. Long may these events continue. (Watch the video from the event on our YouTube channel.)

Also in the news since my last post in September, assuming you haven't followed along on social media, we had 67 people at our first practice of the year on Tuesday, September 22nd! That's the largest practice we've had in the history of our club. Everyone has been great the entire quarter, really--we've had over 40 people at every practice so far! Great, right?

On the competitive front, our travel team has gone 18-7 this fall at tournaments in Champaign, Milwaukee, and here in Chicago. It's not the best record we've ever had, but we had a lot of results of which we can be proud: our A team placed 4th at the 16-team Illini Invite in Champaign (in spite of the fact we only had one girl), our B team placed 3rd at the 16-team Cream City Classic in Milwaukee, and we went 4-0 at a recent 6-team event we hosted here in Chicago. We've still never lost a match at Lakeshore Sport and Fitness.

This weekend, we wrap up our fall travel schedule at the 32-team Badger Classic in Madison, Wisconsin. Our last practice of the fall is on Tuesday, November 17th before we pick back up at the start of January in 2016.

If you haven't already, make sure to visit the media page to check out the videos we've posted this fall.

Practices, Involvement Fairs, and Travel Team Tryouts
September 8th, 2015 · by Jon Mulvey

Practices, Involvement Fairs, and Travel Team TryoutsFor those of you who are returning, welcome back to another exciting year of DePaul University Club Tennis. For those of you who are joining us for the first time, welcome to the club.

I'm excited to announce that our first practice of the fall quarter will be on Tuesday, September 22nd at Lakeshore Sport and Fitness from 9:00 to 11:00pm. More information will be posted about practice as we get closer to the date.

As always, specifically for those of you who are incoming freshman, we will have a table at the Lincoln Park Student Involvement Fair this Friday, September 11th from 1:00 to 4:00pm on the Quad. If it rains, we'll be at the Ray Meyer Fitness and Recreation Center. Freshmen and new members can sign-up for the club, talk with me in person, ask questions of the other club officers, or just shoot the breeze about tennis here at DePaul.

For the first time ever, we will also be at the Loop Student Involvement Fair taking place on Thursday, September 17th from 1:00 to 4:00pm at DePaul Center downtown. Same rules apply: anyone is welcome to sign-up for the club and ask questions of me and my officers.

For those of you competitive types who are looking to tryout for our travel teams and run around the country representing DePaul against schools like Wisconsin, Michigan, Texas, and Arizona, please email me (jon@depaulclubtennis.org) as soon as possible to setup an individual tryout. Once practices get started, you will still have the opportunity to tryout, but an individual tryout will give you a chance to compete right away.

If you haven't already, click here to fill out our recruit questionnaire to let us know more about you.

I hope to see you soon.

News for Incoming Students and Returning Members
June 25th, 2015 · by Jon Mulvey

News for Incoming Students and Returning MembersFirst off, I want to congratulate our travel team for a fantastic 2014/2015 season. We were 31-9 overall and 26-5 in the Midwest section-- both were the best records in the history of our club. We won our first tournament in October and finished the highest we ever have at both Sectionals and the Spring Invitational.

I also want to specifically recognize our Tuesday night recreational team. We had 30+ people at EVERY practice during the fall and winter quarters-- something with which I'm still struggling to come to grips. Your commitment was truly remarkable and you represent just how far we've come as a club over the past four years. We've gone from a club of five random tennis players with no money to one of the largest and most well-funded club sports on campus.

Want to be a part of this amazing club in the fall? Practices will start in early September. Specific details will be posted at the end of August. As usual, we will have a table at the Involvement Fair and we'll most likely hold a social event before the first practice. If you have questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to me through email or social media.

Tryouts for both our A and B travel teams will be held throughout the month of September. If you are interested in trying out, please email me (jon@depaulclubtennis.org) for more information. We will be holding open outdoor hitting sessions for interested players on an as-needed basis this summer, so if you're in or around Chicago at any point, let me know and I'll get you out and hitting with current travel team members. Making a concerted effort to hit with us in the summer will earn you extra credit.

If you haven't yet filled out our recruiting form, make sure to do that as soon as possible so you can stay informed:

Join the Club!

Enjoy the summer and play tennis.

Ten Weeks of Winter Quarter News in a Single Post!
March 23rd, 2015 · by Jon Mulvey

Ten Weeks of Winter Quarter News in a Single Post!Hopefully, most of you have been keeping up with the team on social media. We're on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram, so you have no reason to be uninformed, even if I don't post here for ten weeks...

If you've been following along, you should already be aware that in late February, we had our USTA Midwest Sectional tournament in Madison, Wisconsin. We were seeded 7th overall (our highest seed ever!) and easily won our first two pool matches. Subsequently, after two tough losses to Indiana and Michigan, we rallied to win three straight to take the gold bracket backdraw, putting things right and beating Indiana in the process. We finished the tournament in 9th place with a 5-2 record overall.

Next up for our travel team? The USTA Spring Invitational in Tucson, Arizona. You can watch our videos from last year's tournament by clicking here.

Also in February, our resident club secretary and part-time rockstar, Andrea Kinnerk, and our former VP and current real estate mogul, Reid Mutschler, teamed up to win Chicago's annual 16-team Valentine's Day mixed doubles tournament at McFetridge Tennis Center. In the final, they beat a team with a former Notre Dame varsity player. YEAH.

Spring quarter practices start again on Tuesday, March 31st. If you paid your dues for winter quarter, they carry over into spring quarter. New members are always welcome. Email me at jon@depaulclubtennis.org if you're looking to join.

See you when it's warmer.

We Won a Tournament!/Fall Quarter Wrap-Up
November 18th, 2014 · by Jon Mulvey

We Won a Tournament!/Fall Quarter Wrap-UpTo start off, a huge congratulations to our illustrious travel team which won its first ever major tournament title at the 16-team Milwaukee Lakefront Invitational in late October. We've never won anything competitive before, so that's a pretty big deal!

On a related note of success, two weeks later at the Badger Classic in Madison, we finished in 6th place out of 32 teams-- our best ever showing in four previous appearances. On Friday, we went 3-0 and won our pool despite being the bottom seed. On Saturday, we beat the #4 ranked team in the country from last year (Purdue) on our way to finishing in 6th place. Those results brought our overall record for the fall to an impressive 15-5 (and 14-3 in the Midwest!). Now onto Sectionals in February.

As most of you should already know, tonight will be the last practice of the fall quarter. Information for winter quarter practices will be posted in late December/early January, so make sure to check back for more.

From the top on down, travel team, rec team, EVERYONE, this has been the best fall quarter we've ever have. Thank you for your effort and enjoy winter break.

Thank You, DePaul University Women's Tennis
October 23rd, 2014 · by Jon Mulvey

Thank You, DePaul University Women's TennisFirst of all, thank you to everyone who has come out to practices so far this fall! They've been a huge success. Our first practice on September 23rd brought out 62 PEOPLE, 20 more than we've ever had before, and we've had 40+ at every practice since. It's amazing.

Secondly, I'd like to extend a huge thank you to Coach Ardizzone and DePaul University Women's Tennis for running our club practice on Saturday, October 11th. This is the second year they've been kind enough to run us around court for two hours and this year's practice was better than the last. I'm pretty sure we're one of a select few, if not the only club in the country that gets to do something like this on an annual basis. Thank you Coach Ardizzone for your support. From the top on down, we all appreciate it!

Thirdly, head on over to the schedule page to check out our travel team's results from the first couple tournaments of the fall. In September, we finished 4th out of 16 teams at the Illini Invite in Champaign. The following weekend, we finished 2nd at the 8-team Crusader Invite in Valparaiso, Indiana. This weekend, we're at the Panther Prowl in Milwaukee.

If you haven't already, check out the link below which will take you to a YouTube video of Andrea and Temi killing it at mixed doubles in Champaign. More videos from the fall are coming soon, so stay tuned to our channel.

Fall Practices Start on Tuesday Night at Lakeshore!
September 22nd, 2014 · by Jon Mulvey

Fall Practices Start on Tuesday Night at Lakeshore! The headline pretty much says everything you need to know: club practices start tomorrow night at Lakeshore Sport and Fitness! Any and all DePaul undergrads, graduate students, staff, and alumni are welcome to attend regardless of your skill level.

If you're an incoming freshman or someone who has never played with us before, joining the club is simple. Just show up to practice with $40 to cover the club dues, sign the club sports liability waiver, and you're good to go for the entire fall quarter.

Here are all of the specifics for practice tomorrow night:

Date:  Tuesday, September 23rd
Time:  9:00 to 11:00pm
Location:  Lakeshore Sport and Fitness
Address:  1320 W. Fullerton Ave.
Notes:  See below!

I went into it a bit above, but if you plan on attending on Tuesday night, you need to make sure you're aware of a few very important things:

#1 - The fall club dues are $40 and they MUST be paid in full before your first practice. If you don't cover your dues, unfortunately, you won't be allowed on court. Paying your dues confirms you as an official member of the club and allows you full access to practices in the fall. (That's around $2 per hour for indoor tennis. It's a steal.)

#2 - Please plan on arriving 20-30 minutes early so you have enough time to take care of check-in.

#3 - If you're not sure of your bearings and would like to travel with a group to Lakeshore, we will be meeting at Brownstone's in the Student Center at 8:00pm and leaving around 8:15. Look for all of the people with tennis bags and racquets.

If you have any questions about practice, how to get there, or what you need to bring, please feel free to email me at jon@depaulclubtennis.org and I'll get back to you right away.

Practices Almost Over/Social Media Developments
March 10th, 2014 · by Jon Mulvey

Practices Almost Over/Social Media DevelopmentsSorry for the six week break with no news. Hopefully, you've been following the club Facebook and/or Twitter because A LOT has happened. If you haven't been following along, why not?!

Anyway, this week's practice will be the LAST practice of the winter quarter due to finals. Practices will resume in April after spring break.

Here's some good news for current club members: If you paid your dues for winter quarter, you're covered for spring quarter as well. Indoor practices at Lakeshore Sport and Fitness will continue until the end of April. After that, the club season is over!

Another thing for you to check out would be the recently added videos on our YouTube channel. I've posted seven new videos in the past couple of weeks and been told they're some of the best we've ever done. Go see for yourself.

The switch to Lakeshore has allowed us to make attending practices easier. The commute from campus will be shorter, practices will start an hour earlier (meaning you'll be home an hour earlier), and club dues will stay at the same level they were last year.

Here are the specifics for the first practice:

Date: Tuesday, September 17th
Time: 9:00 to 11:00pm
Location: Lakeshore Sport and Fitness
Address: 1320 W. Fullerton Ave.
Notes: See below!

If you plan on attending next Tuesday, you need to be aware of a few very important things:

#1 - The fall club dues are $40 and they MUST be paid in full before your first practice. If you don't cover your dues, unfortunately, you won't be allowed on court. Paying your dues confirms you as an official member of the club and allows you full access to 10 weeks of indoor practices in the fall. (That's $2 per hour for indoor tennis. It's a steal.)

#2 - You will need to bring proof of health insurance for the club sports liability waiver. These waivers are required to be filled out by all students who participate in club sports. If you don't have your insurance information, you won't be allowed to play.

#3 - Please plan on arriving 15-20 minutes early so you have enough time to take care of all of the required paperwork.

#4 - If you're not sure of your bearings and would like to travel with a group to Lakeshore, we will be meeting at Brownstone's in the Student Center at 8:00pm and leaving around 8:15. Look for all of the people with tennis bags and racquets.

If you have any questions about practice, how to get there, or what you need to bring, please stop by the Student Involvement Fair Friday afternoon from 1:00 to 4:00pm on the Lincoln Park Quad and I'll be happy to talk with you.

Information on Fall Events and Travel Team Tryouts
August 26th, 2013 · by Jon Mulvey

Information on Fall Events and Travel Team TryoutsI have two very important things to talk about in today's update: the Lincoln Park Student Involvement Fair and travel team try-outs for those young men and women who wish to be a part of our competitive team in the fall.

First off: the Student Involvement Fair. This will be the first official Club Tennis event of the year. It will give you an opportunity to meet myself and the other officers, ask us questions about the club, and sign yourself up for the fall. The event takes place on Friday, September 13th at the Lincoln Park Campus Quad from 1:00 to 4:00pm. A lot of other student organizations will have tables, but we'll be grouped together with the other club sports. If you're interested in meeting us and want to talk about the club, make sure to pencil this event into your schedule!

Second in line: travel team tryouts. If you grew up playing, competed in high school or at tournaments and would like to continue playing in college without making a full-time commitment, the travel team is for you. Anyone (male or female) interested in participating should email me ASAP (jon@depaulclubtennis.org) to let me know of your interest and to setup a hitting session. I will then give you all of the information you need to know about tryouts.

If you haven't yet signed up for our mailing list, make sure to do so now. The first email with information about our first Tuesday night practice will be going out soon...

My Condolences to the 2013/2014 Executive Board!
May 15th, 2013 · by Jon Mulvey

My Condolences to the 2013/2014 Executive Board! If you see the following club members around campus or during the course of your daily routine, please express your condolences. They have been unilaterally appointed to next year's executive board and will have the misfortune of working for me the entire year:

Praveen Kopparapu - VP
Andrew Weitzer - Treasurer
Eric Juarez - Secretary
Andrea Kinnerk - Social Chair

For those of you who are interested in potentially contributing your free time to the greater cause of DePaul Club Tennis and/or are bummed that you're not an officer yet, don't fret! There will be plenty of opportunities for you to volunteer in the fall. If you know for sure you want to become more involved, get in contact with me now so I can start thinking up evil deeds to assign to you.

For now, though, I've added a couple new videos from April. One is from Nationals in Arizona, the other is from our DePaul Invitational at Midtown (see below). Visit our channel on YouTube to see them in all their glory.

Stay tuned for more. Incoming freshman, I'm talking to you.

DePaul Wins the First Ever DePaul Invitational!
April 27th, 2013 · by Jon Mulvey

DePaul Wins the First Ever DePaul Invitational!Congratulations to us for winning our own inaugural tournament at Midtown! Five matches in 12 hours over the course of two long nights? I can't really think of a more fitting way for us to wind down the year.

My thanks go out to all of the teams who participated last weekend: Illinois, Loyola, Wisconsin (x2), UIC, UChicago, and Columbia. Very special recognition goes out to our friends at Columbia who played their first team matches in school history. My thanks to our benefactors at Midtown who allowed a bunch of college kids to swear on court for 12 hours. My thanks also go out to Wilson who went out of their way to provide their support for the event.

What's next for DePaul Club Tennis? Two matches this morning against UChicago and Bradley and then our travel team is done for the year. We have one more indoor practice at Midtown on Tuesday night, so make the most of it!

The Results Are In and We're 52nd Best Overall
April 20th, 2013 · by Jon Mulvey

The Results Are In and We're 52nd Best OverallContrary to my own expectations, we all made it back from Nationals in Arizona in one piece! After five days, four nights, seven matches, two rental cars, and one majestic vacation home, we are now officially the 52nd best club in the country.

Despite my penchant for adjectives, I can't say anything which will aptly describe just how fitting this weekend was to cap what has been an amazing year for DePaul University Club Tennis. Ninety degrees, not a cloud in the sky, nothing but tennis for 120 straight hours. I know I keep saying this over and over again like a broken record, but it's totally true: we've come so far in such a short period of time. For those of you who were there, I doubt we'll ever forget the experience. For those of you who weren't there with us, we'll be going back next year when we win Midwest Sectionals. For sure. Live the experience with us by checking out our videos on YouTube: click here.

What's new now that we're back in Chicago? We only have two weeks of Tuesday night indoor practices at Midtown left before we wrap it up for the year. I haven't figured out our schedule for outdoor practices yet, but I'm sure I'll come up with something. Stay tuned to your computers for more.

On the travel schedule? We're hosting our first ever eight team tournament this weekend at Midtown. If you're interested in following along, make sure to check out our pages on Facebook and Twitter. Both will provide live results. Check back on Monday for a full news round-up from the tournament.

End of Quarter Practices and Travel Team Updates
March 11th, 2013 · by Jon Mulvey

End of Quarter Practices and Travel Team UpdatesJust a short update today because I've been wholeheartedly ignoring the website and people have been complaining...

First of all, well done to the travel team which went to Appleton, Wisconsin a few weeks ago. In less than 24 hours, we made the trip up to Wisconsin, won three matches, and were back in Chicago. By my count, that makes us 23-6 overall on the year. Bring on Nationals.

Now, regarding practices for the remainder of this quarter and the start of next. This Tuesday (tomorrow, March 12th) will be our last club practice of the quarter. We'll take two weeks off because of finals and spring break and then be back at Midtown on April 2nd. If you have any questions regarding the schedule, please feel free to reach out to me.

I should also take this opportunity to remind you to like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter if you haven't already. Sick of scrolling through nothing but the drivel your friends post? Follow us and you'll get to see our drivel in your news feed, too. Here are the links: Facebook / Twitter

Good luck with your finals, kids!

We're Midwest Tennis on Campus Club of the Year!
February 19th, 2013 · by Jon Mulvey

We're Midwest Tennis on Campus Club of the Year!Yeah, you read that right. Despite my own masochistic attempts to convince myself we wouldn't win, in the end, we did and I couldn't be happier. When we were presented with the award on court just after beating Illinois to win the back draw and 9th place overall, I was, literally, speechless for the first time in my entire life.

What does this mean for DePaul Club Tennis? We've received a bid to the USTA National Championships in April and we're now in the running for National Club of the Year. As for how we operate, nothing changes. We won't stop. We're going to continue doing all of the things which got us here in the first place. If anything, it's made me even more determined to grow our club into an example for other clubs at DePaul and other club tennis teams across the country.

I feel the need to say that everyone in this club shares part of this award. It isn't limited to the travel team. Those of you on the rec team who have paid your dues, attended practices, and enjoyed yourselves have all contributed to our winning of this award. It's not simply a trophy-- it's recognition for all of our hard work and it's motivation for us to continue what we're doing. Clearly, we're doing something right.

For the record, Jon's list of thank yous goes like this: Thank you to Steve Wise for putting up with me and my ridiculousness for the past 18 months, thank you to the Midwest Tennis on Campus board for recognizing the work we're doing, thank you to my friend Aaron Mabra at the USTA who has been a huge help over the past six months, thank you to our friends at Midtown Athletic Club who have to deal with us three times a week, thank you to Nicole Garton and Lisa Hanson Lamey who have been our rock of support at DePaul, thank you to all of the friends and families of our travel team members who have supported us this year, and, most importantly, thank you to all of you wonderful club members for making my job worth every minute.

It seems sort of secondary in the grand scheme of things given we qualified for nationals anyway, but we had a great weekend on court at sectionals as well. We went 5-2, finished in 9th place, won the back draw, and beat Michigan State and Illinois. We only lost to Purdue, who finished 2nd, and Marquette, who were seeded 3rd. Check out our Facebook page and Twitter feed for a match by match account, or, if you can't be bothered, visit the schedule page for a list of our results.

USTA Midwest Sectionals Start Tomorrow Morning!
February 14th, 2013 · by Jon Mulvey

USTA Midwest Sectionals Start Tomorrow Morning!First of all, congrats to our travel team who beat UIC and Loyola at Midtown this past weekend in our final two warm-up matches before sectionals. We're polished, we're in form, we're ready.

This weekend in Madison will be the first time a team from DePaul has competed in an official USTA Tennis on Campus tournament in several years. To say we've come a long way since early September is a massive, massive understatement. We've transformed ourselves. We're an entirely different club. Some of the people are the same, we still represent DePaul, but our entire mentality has changed.

While I still have the chance, I just want to say (officially and in front of everyone) that whatever happens this weekend, I couldn't be more proud of our travel team and the effort they have each put in over the past two months. All of you know who you are. Your commitment has made my own administrative trials and tribulations 100% worth it. There's no other club in the country like ours. Let's show everyone that this weekend.

If you haven't seen our draw, make sure to check out the schedule page to see who we're playing. Also, make sure to check Facebook and Twitter for regular updates on our tournament progress.

Hey, Kids, We're Going to Madison - Want to Come?
January 30th, 2013 · by Jon Mulvey

Hey, Kids, We're Going to Madison - Want to Come?As I mentioned very casually at practice last night, our travel team will be making the short trip to Madison, Wisconsin in two weeks time to compete at the USTA's Midwest sectional Tennis on Campus tournament. This will be the first legitimate shot in our club's history of qualifying for nationals.

I refuse to make any predictions other than to say I think we're going to shock a lot of people. We've been catching people off guard all year and I can't see this tournament being any different. If you have nothing planned for that weekend, as part of our club, this will be something you don't want to miss. Even if you're not playing, I want as many people as possible to come out and support those who are. Regardless of our results, I promise it will be a weekend to remember.

The cost is totally reasonable for a weekend in Madison, so, if you're interested, send me an email, shoot me a text, or talk to me in person and I'll pass along all the relevant information. We will leave Chicago on Thursday, February 14th and return in the afternoon on Sunday the 17th.

Seriously. Don't miss this. You'll regret it if you do.

Winter Quarter Underway Plus Northwestern Results!
January 21st, 2013 · by Jon Mulvey

Winter Quarter Underway Plus Northwestern Results!Yes, winter quarter practices have started on Tuesday nights, but it's still not too late to join! We're an open club, so simply bring your $40 in club dues along with you to practice tomorrow night and you'll be ready to play. Want more details? Visit our Midtown practice information page here for all of the specifics. If you still have questions, please feel free to email me.

I also want to take time to congratulate our travel team who made the trip up to Evanston this past Saturday afternoon and beat a full-strength Northwestern team for the first time in our club's six-year history! Last year, we lost to them in Evanston 30-6. This year, we beat them 22-20. We've come such a long way in the span of twelve months. Hopefully, this gives us the momentum we need going into Midwest sectionals as we look to upset the applecart and qualify for nationals in Arizona.

Speaking of Evanston, I've added a new video to our channel on YouTube (click here to view). It's from our scrimmage against Northwestern this past October. If you traveled, check it out because I made sure everyone's face made at least one appearance in the video.

I'll see everyone on Tuesday night for practice!

Edit (1/23): I've added another video, this one from the Illini Invite in October. It's embeded below.

Winter Quarter Practices Start on Tuesday Night
January 14th, 2013 · by Jon Mulvey

Winter Quarter Practices Start on Tuesday NightWelcome back! I hope you all had an enjoyable winter break. The start of a new quarter means the start of another round of Club Tennis practices. Last quarter was the most successful in the six-year history of our club. This quarter will be even better, starting with our first practice on Tuesday night.

As with the fall, winter practices will be every Tuesday night at Midtown Athletic Club on Fullerton starting at 10:00pm. Club dues are set at $40, which will allow you access to our indoor practices through the end of April. If you plan on attending on Tuesday, please arrive at least a half hour early so we can take care of all the necessary paperwork. Those of you who will be practicing for the first time, make sure to bring proof of insurance so you can complete the club sports liability waiver.

Keep in mind the club dues need to be paid in full before you set foot on court. If you make it to every practice throughout the winter and spring, this works out to around $1.25 per hour of tennis. Considering how much it generally costs to play indoor tennis in the winter in Chicago, it's well worth the investment. For those of you who paid your dues last quarter but were unable to pick-up a club shirt, extra shirts will be available before practice. All of the remaining sizes will be first come, first serve.

If you don't know how to get to Midtown, some of us will be meeting at Brownstone's in the Lincoln Park Student Center at 9:00pm on Tuesday and heading out to Midtown as a group. If you have any questions, please let me know.

I hope to see you on Tuesday!

Fall Quarter Wrap-Up/Concerning Winter Quarter
December 17th, 2012 · by Jon Mulvey

Fall Quarter Wrap-Up/Concerning Winter QuarterI hope everyone is enjoying their winter break! I know I personally took the term "break" far too literally this year (it's why I haven't updated the website). I promise I'll get it together after the holidays...

Fall quarter went better than any of us had envisioned. Around 60 different students/alumni of all different skill levels came out to our practices over the course of the ten weeks. Our travel team went 14-4 overall in competitive matches and finished tied for seventh at the Badger Classic in Madison-- by far the biggest tournament in which we've ever played. I'm proud of what this club has accomplished on so many different levels and in such a short period of time. Last year, we were nowhere. This year, we're organized, committed, and moving forward.

In regard to the club's plans for winter quarter, our first practice at Midtown will be on Tuesday, January 15th, 2013. The cost of dues is as of yet undecided, as I'm waiting to hear the full extent of the funding we're going to receive from DePaul. I'm planning to have a social/party to kick-off the quarter, similar to the one we had at Pequod's in late September. All of the details will be posted to the mailing list as well as our Facebook and Twitter pages, so if you haven't subscribed to either, make sure to do so by clicking the links below.

Happy holidays, everyone! I'll see you in 2013.

P.S. Videos from the fall are coming soon. I promise!

DCT Travels to the Badger Classic This Weekend!
November 8th, 2012 · by Jon Mulvey

DePaul Club Tennis Travels to the Badger Classic This Weekend! It's that time of year again--time for DePaul Club Tennis to gather its best players together and take on the Badger Classic in Madison, Wisconsin. What a tradition we have. Two years in a row!

This year, unlike last, we're taking ourselves seriously. Despite being drawn in an extremely difficult pool with Minnesota, our BFFs at Northwestern, and Iowa State, we're out to prove we're better than everyone assumes we are. At the Illini Invite in Champaign, we were rained out and we didn't have a chance to show who we really are. This time around, I think we're going to surprise a lot of people.

Here's our team for the 2012 Badger Classic:

Devan Eager
Eric Juarez
Andrea Kinnerk
Jon Mulvey
Reid Mutschler
Alex Nemz
Taylor Spence
Andrew Weitzer

If you're in regular contact with any of the above travel team members, please feel free to pass along your good vibes. We wish you were there with us.

For good ol' nostalgia sake, make sure to check out our media page for a couple videos from last year's Badger Classic. I'll be shooting even more this time around...

Recent Travel Team Matches/Home Quad at MidtownFirst of all, congratulations to our travel team who went 3-0 on Sunday down in Hyde Park at UChicago! We beat three very solid teams from Purdue, Loyola, and UChicago, so major kudos to everyone who was involved.

Secondly, I want to announce that we'll be hosting our first EVER home quad at Midtown this coming Saturday evening starting at 6:00pm. If you're free and looking for something to do, please feel free to come out in support our travel team. Free admission, free drinks (maybe?), and free tennis. What could be better? Assuming we do well, we'll all go out to celebrate afterwards. (Even if we don't do well, I'm sure we'll still go out to celebrate our misfortune...)

Lastly, anyone who is interested in taking the weekend off the weekend of November 9th and 10th to travel up to Madison in support of DePaul Club Tennis at the Badger Classic should see me at practice this week! I have travel information and pricing. EVERYONE is invited to come with us, regardless of whether or not you'll be playing competitively. Last year was such a fantastic experience that I wanted to open it up to the entire club this year. I promise it will be worth the trip.

DePaul Club Tennis at the Illini Invite This WeekendWell, it's finally here. Our first weekend tournament of the year-- the second annual Illini Invite in wonderfully majestic Champaign/Urbana, Illinois! Last year we were rusty and wholly unprepared for competition. Superb September/Support Club Tennis on OrgSync
October 1st, 2012 · by Jon Mulvey

Superb September/Support Club Tennis on OrgSyncWow. What a great first month to start off the year! Unlike most other clubs on campus which see a significant drop off in attendance after the first week, we actually GREW in numbers at our second indoor practice at Midtown. Let's keep that momentum going into October.

Interested in doing more? Help us secure funding from DePaul! The university allocates funding to individual student organizations through applications on OrgSync. Based off of our membership totals on OrgSync and the overall quality of our application, the SAF-B Board (of which I'm currently a part) will allocate university funds for club use. The more money we receive from SAF-B, the more events and programs we can offer, and, more importantly, the lower your club dues for each quarter!

So, long story short, if you haven't already, join the Club Tennis group on OrgSync by logging in here using your Campus Connect account! Fifteen seconds of your time will go a long way towards helping us secure funding for future quarters.

Thanks so for your help and we'll see everyone at practice on Tuesday night!

The FIRST Club Tennis Social at Pequod's Pizza
September 27th, 2012 · by Jon Mulvey

The FIRST Club Tennis Social at Pequod's PizzaAre you interested in getting to know your fellow club members outside of tennis? Have you been considering joining, but aren't sure of a good way to introduce yourself? Will you be bored and/or hungry tonight around 9:00pm? If you answered yes to any of the above, come to the first ever Club Tennis social TONIGHT at Pequod's Pizza on Clybourn!

As officers, socials are something we've wanted to do for a very long time to help foster a greater sense of unity among our club. If this one goes well and there's enough sustained interest for more, we'll consider having socials once a month at various eateries on the north side near the Lincoln Park campus.

Here are the specifics for tonight:

Pequod's Pizza (starting at 9:00pm)
2207 N. Clybourn Ave.
Chicago, IL 60614

Like we do with practices, we'll be meeting at Brownstone's in the Lincoln Park Student Center at 8:30pm and heading out as a group. If you'd prefer to show up on your own, feel free to arrive at Pequod's any time around 9:00pm. Bring your appetite, some money to chip in for splitting pizzas, and a few interesting topics of conversation. If you have any friends who might be interested in Club Tennis, bring them along, as well!

Good company and great pizza. What more could you want out of a Thursday night?

Practice at Midtown: It's Not Too Late to Join!
September 25th, 2012 · by Jon Mulvey

Outdoor Practices Start Tomorrow at Oz Park!Last week, nearly 40 DePaul students came out to Midtown Athletic Club in what was the largest single day practice in the history of DePaul Club Tennis. Tonight, we'll be at Midtown again and it's not too late to become involved!

If you were unable to make last week's practice due to prior commitments, you're still more than welcome to come out this week and take part. The best thing about Club Tennis is the simple fact we're an open club, meaning you can join any time throughout the quarter. Unlike other club teams, we don't hold try-outs and you won't be kicked out if you can't make it to practice. Once you pay your dues, you can come out to as many practices as you wish.

Basically, Club Tennis can be whatever you want it to be. If you're just looking to stay in shape, you can come to practice and run around for two hours. If you're simply looking for hitting partners here on campus, we're the perfect networking opportunity. If you're a stronger player and looking for more, you can join our competitive ladder and try your luck against other schools as part of our travel team. Either way, come out tonight and get involved on the ground floor in what will soon become the best club tennis program in the country.

If you have any questions regarding the club, becoming a member, or practices at Midtown, please let us know!

Outdoor Practices Start Tomorrow at Oz Park!
September 20th, 2012 · by Jon Mulvey

Outdoor Practices Start Tomorrow at Oz Park!A big thank you to everyone who came out to Tuesday night's practice at Midtown. Numbers-wise, it was the biggest practice in the six year history of DePaul Club Tennis. I sincerely hope you're all looking forward to coming back to Tuesday night practices this quarter. Midtown is such a great facility and we're supremely lucky to be able to play there.

For those of you who weren't able to make it to Midtown on Tuesday night, don't fret-- you're still more than welcome to come out to practices, starting with this Friday's first outdoor practice at Oz Park!

Similar to Tuesday, we'll be meeting Friday morning at 11:30am at Brownstone's in the Lincoln Park Student Center and then heading out to Oz Park as a group. If this will be your first practice, please make sure to bring your $35 in dues for the fall as well as your insurance information for the club sports liability waiver. For those of you who came Tuesday night, you're all squared away for the rest of the quarter.

Assuming the weather is bad on Friday morning (which it might be-- weather.com tells me there's a 50/50 chance of rain), I will post messages on both Facebook and Twitter an hour or two ahead of time letting everyone know if practice has been canceled. If you haven't yet, make sure you like/follow us on both sites so you can stay informed!

Practices Start Next Tuesday at Midtown Athletic Club
September 11th, 2012 · by Jon Mulvey

Practices Start Next Tuesday at Midtown Athletic ClubNo more waiting. Dust off your racquets and try to remember where you threw your tennis shoes. Club Tennis is back in full swing and practices start next Tuesday night, September 18th at 10:00pm at the premier indoor tennis facility in the country-- the 18-court strong Midtown Athletic Club—Chicago!

This year, practices at Midtown will be every Tuesday night from 10:00pm to midnight and run through November 6th, the week before the start of finals. Any and all DePaul University students are more than welcome to attend regardless of their skill level. Just bring your $35 in club dues for the fall, a tennis racquet, and a considerable amount of expendable energy. We will provide everything else.

If you're subscribed to the club mailing list, check your inboxes for the email I sent out earlier this evening. If you're not on the mailing list, I've created a snazzy new Midtown practice information page which can be accessed by clicking here.

Have any lingering questions or concerns about the first practice? Feel free to get in contact with me and I'll be happy to answer them for you. See you Tuesday night!

DCT at Real Life Recess and Student Involvement Fair
September 5th, 2012 · by Jon Mulvey

DePaul Club Tennis at Real Life Recess and Student Involvement FairWelcome to Chicago, everyone! For those of you who are new to DePaul, now is a great time to get involved and start making connections which will last you all four years. For those who are returning for another year-- it's never too late to become more engaged.

In the spirit of promoting involvement, Club Tennis will be participating in two welcome events this weekend: Friday's Real Life Recess and Sunday's Lincoln Park Involvement Fair, both taking place on the Lincoln Park campus quad. At these two events, you will have the opportunity to meet myself and the other club officers, find out more about who we are and what we offer, and ask any specific or lingering questions you may have about joining the club and becoming involved this fall.

Here are the event overviews:

Real Life Recess
Friday, September 7th - 3:30pm to 6:30pm
Lincoln Park Campus Quad

Update: If it rains, Real Life Recess will be held at the Ray!

Student Involvement Fair
Sunday, September 9th - 11:00am to 3:00pm
Lincoln Park Campus Quad

If you're available either day, please stop by our table to introduce yourself. We love to meet fellow DePaul tennis enthusiasts and appreciators. We'll have a big banner with our logo, so we'll be impossible to miss.

Welcome to DePaul University Club Tennis
August 20th, 2012 · by Jon Mulvey

Welcome to DePaul University Club TennisYes, after months and months of periodic work from yours truly and a complete site redesign (thanks, DePaul Athletic Department), the official DePaul University Club Tennis website is finally finished and available for LIVE internet viewing!

Eventually, this site will serve as an expansive archive of our club's exploits throughout the Midwest (and, hopefully, beyond) and provide more information than you would ever need or care to know about our members. Until then, take a quick glance at our schedule for the fall, enjoy our many professionally-edited videos on the media page, or peruse last season's club roster to see your name in lights.

For now, enjoy your stay and check back often. If you have any questions about this year, please let me know!
